How to Prepare for Typing Exams (Data Entry & Job Tests)
Most typing tests for jobs follow the same pattern: a passage on screen, a timer (usually 1–5 minutes), and scoring on speed (WPM) plus accuracy. Here's how to prepare properly.
What speed do you actually need?
- 30 WPM — minimum for most data-entry posts
- 40 WPM — competitive for clerk and office jobs
- 50+ WPM — stenographer and senior posts
- 90%+ accuracy — required almost everywhere; errors can disqualify you even with good speed
How the scoring works
Examiners count every 5 correct keystrokes as one word. Wrong words don't just lose marks — in many tests each error reduces your net speed. That's why accuracy-first practice wins.
A 4-week practice plan
Week 1: Slow and correct. 15 minutes daily on the typing lessons. Don't look at the keyboard.
Week 2: Timed 1-minute tests daily. Target: 25 WPM at 95% accuracy.
Week 3: 3-minute tests with new paragraphs each time (practice here). Target: 32 WPM.
Week 4: Full 5-minute mock exams under exam conditions — no pauses, no corrections beyond one backspace per error.
Exam-day tips
- Read the first line before the timer starts if allowed
- Never stop on a mistake — keep flowing; one error costs less than a 3-second freeze
- Keep wrists straight and breathe normally; tension kills speed
- Don't watch the WPM counter if the software shows one — it distracts
